Abstract
Sirus Alinejad—an experienced journalist well versed in the history of modern Iranian cultural developments—together with Safdar Taqizadeh—a thoughtful and discerning translator and literary critic—conducted several engaging and insightful conversations with Najaf Darīābandarī. At times, the tone of the interviews takes on the character of drawing out recollections and reflections from Daryabandari; at other moments, the interviewers appear as sharp interlocutors engaged in lively debate. The result is a highly readable series of dialogues. Daryabandari shares details of his cultural and political life, as well as candid opinions on modern Persian literature, the intricacies of translation, and forthright judgments concerning prominent figures such as Sayyid Ḥasan Taqīzādeh, Aḥmad Shāmlū, Ṣadeq Hedayat, Jalal Al-e Ahmad, Ebrahim Golestan, and Mohammad-Ali Eslami Nodushan. This essay is the author’s personal reflection—an appreciative response written after an eager reading of the book, sharing with readers the insights and impressions it inspired.
