To revitalize intellectual development throughout history, dictionaries have played a significant role; accordingly, from the earliest centuries, numerous lexicons were compiled. A considerable number of Arabic–Persian dictionaries were also prepared for the use of researchers and, primarily, Persian-speaking beginners. Among these were versified lexicons composed to facilitate the memorization and easy learning of vocabulary, the oldest known of which was written by Abū Naṣr Farāhī in the seventh century. The text published in this article is likewise a versified Arabic-to-Persian dictionary entitled Qunyat al-Fityān. Precise information about the name of its poet is not available; however, given the period of transcription of an extant copy of this work, it goes back to before the ninth century. This text consists of a versified preface and a nūnīyya poem in 213 verses. The introduction discusses the author, the period of composition, and the linguistic and scribal features of the work.
