Abstract

In the landscape of Islamic historiography there exist certain stations that have thus far received little scholarly attention. One of these is the work of Ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī (d. 354/965), who, while recognized as a traditionist (ahl al-ḥadīth), was also shaped by the intellectual traditions of Khurāsān and Sīstān. His al-Thiqāt and al-Majrūḥīn are well-known, alongside his Ṣaḥīḥ and Rawḍat al-‛Uqalāʾ, each of which bears distinctive features. A significant portion of al-Thiqāt is devoted to the Prophet’s sīra and the history of the caliphs, yet one of its sections—written at unusual length compared to the rest—concerns the Maqtal al-Ḥusayn. This article discusses Ibn Ḥibbān’s historiographical contributions in general and focuses in particular on his account of the martyrdom of al-Ḥusayn.
