Tuḥfat al-Barrara of Majd al-Dīn Baghdādī in the Works of Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Aṭ‛ānī

Abstract
The Tuḥfat al-Barrara fī Masāʾil al-ʿAshara by Majd al-Dīn Baghdādī (554–606/1159–1209) is among the most important works produced by Sufi masters after the 6th/12th century. Baghdādī, a prominent mystic later counted among the spiritual guides of the Kubrawīyya order, exerted wide influence through this text. The work deeply impacted later Sufi writings, with seekers of the path following its guidance and integrating its materials into their own treatises. This study focuses on the significance of the Tuḥfat al-Barrara for Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Ḥalabī al-Busṭāmī al-Aṭ‛ānī (748–807/1347–1405), a distinguished mystic of the 8th/14th century. It examines passages transmitted from Baghdādī’s work in his Tadhkirat al-Murīd li-Ṭalab al-Mazīd and Rawḍat al-Ḥubūr wa-Ma‛din al-Surūr. The fact that the Tuḥfat al-Barrara was cited nearly two centuries after its composition in the western Islamic lands demonstrates its enduring value and authority among mystics of those regions. Beyond Ibn al-Aṭ‛ānī, the influence of the Tuḥfat al-Barrara can also be traced in the works of other mystics: from Khayr al-Majālis by Ḥamīd Qalandar to Manārāt al-Sāʾirīn by Najm Rāzī in the eastern Islamic lands, and in Baghdad within the assemblies of ‛Abd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad b. ‛Abd al-Raḥmān Isfarāyinī.
