Tanbīh al-Ghāfilīn is an Arabic work by Abū al-Layth al-Samarqandī, composed in the fourth century AH. It is regarded as one of the most important works in the fields of Islamic belief and ethics and, from the time of its author onward, attracted the attention of numerous writers and preachers. Its widespread reception led to the production of several translations into Persian as well as Turkish and Spanish. As far as is currently known, the earliest Persian translation of the work was prepared in the early sixth century AH by Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Badīl b. Muḥammad al-Ṣāliḥīn. This translation has recently been critically edited and published by Ḥāmid Khātamīpūr. The present article offers a brief introduction to the original work and its author, while also examining the strengths of this new edition and identifying a number of its shortcomings. Through this assessment, the study contributes to the evaluation of recent efforts in the critical editing and publication of classical Islamic texts.
