Abstract

‛Abd Allāh b. ‛Abd al-Raḥmān al-Aṣamm al-Masma‛ī (d. ca. 220 AH) is reported to have authored a ḥadīth collection on the visitation (zīyāra) of Imām al-Ḥusayn. The authenticity of the traditions attributed to this work was challenged already in the early Imāmī period by Ibn al-Ghaḍāʾirī and al-Najāshī. In more recent scholarship, prominent scholars such as al-Sīstānī, al-Madadī, and al-Shubayrī have likewise expressed doubts concerning their authenticity. Twenty-six traditions from al-Aṣamm’s Kitāb al-Mazār have survived. Most of these reports are unusually lengthy, and with the exception of three narrations, none possesses a parallel chain of transmission independent of al-Aṣamm; consequently, they remain solitary reports (mutafarridāt). Furthermore, many of these traditions display indications of narrative embellishment and literary construction. Through a detailed textual analysis of the surviving material, this study argues that the traditions of al-Aṣamm’s Mazār are characterized by recurring formulas, narrative patterns, and distinctive stylistic features that appear to reflect the literary activity of al-Aṣamm himself. The article further contends that the apparently independent chains associated with the three non-solitary reports are, in reality, dependent upon al-Aṣamm’s version of the traditions. Accordingly, all twenty-six surviving reports may ultimately be regarded as unique transmissions deriving solely from him.
