Using others’ ideas directly or indirectly in one’s own publication without acknowledging the sources in an accurate and known manner (deliberately or otherwise) or pretending that this idea belongs to oneself is called plagiarism. The present article intends to discuss academic plagiarism. Thus, first plagiarism will be defined. Then, focusing on plagiaristic behavior of some professors and their aims and motivations, concrete examples will be given. Afterwards, we shall see why plagiarism is unethical. The question will be discussed from the perspectives of consequentionalism, deontology, and virtue ethics. Finally, ten guidelines will be given to help avoid plagiarism.
