Farsiyyat is a literary term used in Arabic literature to refer to Arabic poems containing certain Persian words or phrases, with the most prominent example being the Farsiyyat of Abū Nuwās. This term is also broadly applied to include all Persian words, phrases, and sentences used in ancient Arabic poetry or prose, whether in their original form or in an Arabized version. The late Professor Ahmad Mahdavi Damghani, in this entry from the Encyclopedia Iranica, explores pre-Islamic Farsiyyat, Iranian words in the Quran, and Farsiyyat after the advent of Islam, briefly introducing the most important sources on this topic. The translator has also added some notes in the margins and expanded the bibliography with additional references.
