Interest in the history of the Abbasids may be largely due to access to a number of new sources. One of the most important new sources is Majhul ol-Muallef which is a historical work. Of course, some of the problems associated with this work are still unsolved. These issues include questions about the title of the book, the date of its compilation, the identity of its author and its historiographical value. The purpose of this article is to look into these problems, and to make some guesses in order to clarify the vague points of the book so that it would be used more for improving our understanding of the Abbasid history and policies. The following paper is a translation of Alton L. Daniel›s article which is on the history of the Abbasid dynasty and its place in Islamic historiography.
