Abstract

Literary criticism has flourished in the Abbasid period with the advent of a number of literary critics and scholars in the field of debate, writing, and rhetoric; and valuable works were created in that period, which originated the formation of the currents and other subsequent works using the same techniques. In the following paper, the writer is going to study two pioneering works in literary criticism: Al-Mathal ol-Sāer fi Adab al-Kitāb wa al-Shāer by Dhiāoddīn ibn Athīr and Al-falak ol-Dāer alal-Mathal ol-Sāer by Ibn Abi al-Hadīd which is a critique of the first book. Regarding this, he first of all introduces both authors and their works. Following this, he is going to examine each of the books, and points out some of Ibn Abi Hadīd’s criticisms of Ibn Athīr’s book.
