Strolling in Jāhid’s Treatises

Abstract

Abū Othmān Amro bin Bahr-e Basri, Known as Jāhid, is the Mu›tazilite theologian and scholar who has written in the field of religion, politics, history, ethics, vocabulary, geography, and so on; and the importance of him and his works is not overlooked. The following paper is a translation of the treatise Al-hāsid wa al-Mahsood, selected by Obaydullah bin Hisān. In this treatise, Jāhid speaks about jealousy, jealous person, signs of jealousy, and the ways of dealing with a jealous person. In order to do this, he has made use of the Qur’an verses, traditions, and some historical stories.
