Wilfred Madelung, a prominent German scholar, on the occasion of introducing and criticizing the valuable book One and the Other [i.e.: God and all the men›s thoughts about him]: Considerations about Books of Mellal wa Nehal Negāshti-eIslami written by another famous Islamist scholar Professor Josef van Ess briefly expresses his views on the issue of the Prophet›s succession along with the Shia and Sunni›s position in this regard. This time, he has more explicitly explained about his point of view and what he stated in his book the Succession to Muhammad. Because of the importanceof the attitudes and views he has in the mentioned article about the history of founding Shi›ism as well as the issue of the succession of the Prophet (pbuh), and due to his criticizing some of Van Ess› views on the above-mentioned issues, this paper is going to review some of his remarkable opinions on these issues one by one.

The following paper is the Persian translation of a book report written by Professor Wilfred Madelung about Professor Josef van Ess› recently released book One and the Other [i.e.: God and all the men›s thoughts about him]: Considerations about Books of Mellal wa Nehal Negāshti-e Islami. In this short article, Madelung, presenting his general assessment of Van Ess› book, points out his most important different views from Van Ess over important issues and controversial events of early Islam, such as the question of succession of the Prophet (PBUH), the usurpation of the caliphate, the killing of Uthman, and the Shias and the Sunnis disputes over these matters. Some of his sympathetic views with the Shi›a views on these issues are very important and worthy of consideration since he is a historian and a neutral scholar who has an objective view about both Shiite and Sunni religions.

Abu Tāhir Khātooni was one of the literary men and poets of the fifth and sixth centuries AH, and also one of the agents of Seljuk ruling system. No collection of poems is left by him; however, there are some valuable scattered verses and short poems by him in different literary and historical works, as well as in tadhkirahs. One of his verse quoted in Hamdullah Mustoufi Qazvīni›s Nozhat ol-Qoloob is: Moosh chon bāzmānd az koshtan/ bar palangān gamiz konad. The present paper is going to discuss the term «koshtan» which in both manuscripts of Nozhat ol-Qoloob available to the authorhas been recorded in the same way. According to the author, this term was originally «leshtan» and was distorted due to the bad reading of the scribes, or publishers, or even Mostoufii himself.

Among the works left by Aghā Hossein Khānsāri there is a Waqf-nāme which is written to Mīrzā Raziyā Muhammad. In this work, he made an effort to write a literary text in the form of a Waqf-nāme by using the Qur›an verses and hadiths. A version of this Waqf-nāme is available in manuscript No. 2570 of the University (frame 58-60), and also in the manuscript No. 1997 (frame 165-171). The author has based the present paper on the manuscript No. 1997, then he compared it with the manuscript No. 2570 and added the different and extra points in bracket.

The Critical Bibliography of Seyyed Ali Hamedāni›s Urād

Different manuscripts of Seyyed Ali Hamedāni›s Urād-e Fathiye and its explanation and excerpts are available in Iran. The scholars have only mentioned one manuscript of Urād-e Fathiye, and two manuscripts of Resālat al-Urād, and one manuscript of Asnād-e Urād while 28 manuscripts of Seyyed Ali Hamedāni›s Urād have been so far discovered: three manuscripts of Urād-e Fathiye, five manuscripts of Resālat al-Urād, five manuscripts of Sharh-e Ja›fari, four manuscripts of other explanations of Urād-e Fathiye, four manuscripts of the excerpts of Urād-e Fathiye, and seven otherunidentified manuscripts of Seyyed›s Urād. Having studied the sources related to Seyyed›s works and examined the manuscripts catalogs, the author has studied the discovered manuscripts as much as he could. After classifying and introducing all the published manuscripts, he analyzed and criticized the catalogs and the points which the cataloguersmentioned about those manuscripts. Some of the cataloguers have considered two manuscripts of Resālat al-Urād, three manuscripts of explanations of Urād-e Fathiye, and one manuscripts of the excerpts of Urād-e Fathiye as Seyyed Ali›s Urād-e Fathiye; and regarded two unidentified manuscripts of his work as sharh-e Ja›fari. Introducing the 28recently-found manuscripts of Seyyed Ali›s Urād along with its explanations and excerpts has opened the way for other scholars to give priority to the critical correction and publication of Seyyed Ali›s works. This article tries to remind the researchers of the necessity of the compilation of a critical and updated bibliography of all of Seyyed Ali›s works;therefore, the addressees would have more new information about this well-known scholar.

Interest in the history of the Abbasids may be largely due to access to a number of new sources. One of the most important new sources is Majhul ol-Muallef which is a historical work. Of course, some of the problems associated withthis work are still unsolved. These issues include questions about the title of the book, the date of itscompilation, the identity of its author and its historiographical value. The purpose of this article is tolook into these problems, and to make some guesses in order to clarify the vague points of the book sothat it would be used more for improving our understanding of the Abbasid history and policies. Thefollowing paper is a translation of Alton L. Daniel›s article which is on the history of the Abbasid dynastyand its place in Islamic historiography.

Self-citation is a discourse that has been used by western scholars in recent years to encounter the Holy Qur›an in order to find the meaning of the Qur›anic words. It means that in order to present the meaning of its vocabulary, the Qur›an refers to itself. The Qur›an Narrated by the Qur›an (Le Coran par lui-même), by Anne Sylvie Boisliveau, is the result of a new research in finding the meaning of the words of the Qur›an and is written in French. The author of the book has tried to present a new method of interaction with the Qur›an by criticizing Izutso and Daniel Madigan›s method in obtaining the meaning of the Qur›an vocabulary. Regarding this, she has based her research on presenting the meaning of the word «book» using the self-citation model due to the importance and high frequency of this term. The main question of this research is the meaning of the word «book» in the Qur›anic application, and its purpose is to provide the model and method of the author in receiving and inferring the meaning of the word «book».

One of the hadiths printed in farhang-e Ma›thoorāt-e Motoon-e Erfāni (1380: Soroosh Publication) is «Bi›tha ela al-ahmar wa al-aswad» which is quoted from Mersād ol-Ebād and is translated into «I›ve become a prophet for the red and black (skin)». Now the question is what the meaning of the red skin was at the time of the Prophet (Pbuh). Does ahmar only mean red? Do ahmar/abyaz in this hadith just mean red skin and white skin? The author of the following paper believes that one can find a more appropriate meaning for this hadith than the one presented in farhang-e Ma›thoorāt-e Motoon-e Erfāni by searching and studying it in other sources and texts.
